This year’s Leukemia Cup Regatta adds a new element, the “Military Challenge” which will be held on Friday, April 7 2006. This will be a special race that honors our current and former members of the military and provides “bragging rights” for the coming year as to which branch of the service has the best sailors. Crews will represent the Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, Army, and Air Force. Boats for the race are being provided by members of Hobie Fleet 51. This race is sponsored by Lt. Col. Charles H. Clark, III, USA (retired).
Teams will compete on “matched” Hobies to ensure that it is a contest of sailing skills, rather than who has the best boat. Sailors will be assigned to their boats at the Skippers’ meeting at 9:00 a.m. and then have two to three hours to practice on their boats.
The course will be a basic triangle course, with one, two, or three races depending on wind conditions. The Race Committee Chair will set the race rules and make any adjustments as needed due to changing conditions. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place and all participants will receive a commemorative medallion.
